Save time by freezing meals you didn’t know you could
Freezer meals are the perfect way to save time in your busy household.
They also make the perfect gift to those who need a little extra help — someone who recently divorced or lost a loved one, someone recently recovering from surgery or who just welcomed a little one into their home.
But most people do not have much experience in creating freezer meals.
The first thing you should know is that you do not need to cook a special meal to freeze.
Many of the meals you already cook can easily be frozen.
So instead of cooking food just to freeze it, you can cook a large meal and freeze what isn’t eaten.
You simply put them in the correct container, pop them into the freezer, and call it a day.
The next time you need a quick meal or are just feeling a little lazy, you pull it out and either pop it into the oven or put it in the slow cooker.
What you Need
You will need to purchase airtight containers to store the food in.
Tupperware is fine to use, but it can take up a lot of space in the freezer.
If you are seeking a more space-conscious option, plastic freezer bags are an excellent choice.
You simply suck out all the air you can prior to freezing and lay them flat in the freezer.
You can label them and stack them as needed.
Aside from that, there isn’t much else you need.
If you want to freeze sauces, ice-cube trays make nice portions.
You can do the same with butter and spice mixes.
If you require single servings of meals, you can freeze them in smaller bags, placing the smaller bags inside of a larger one to prevent freezer burn.
How Long will the Food Keep?
Part of the beauty of freezing meals is that you can enjoy a bit of it now, and then again in a few weeks or months.
When you simply put leftovers in the fridge, you have to finish them quickly or else waste money by throwing them away.
Freezing them allows you to space the meals out, preventing you from tiring of them, and stops you from throwing money away.
Meat, fresh fruits, and fresh vegetables can keep in the freezer for up to a year.
Mixed items, such as pastas and casseroles, should keep for 2-3 months, depending on how deep of a freeze your freezer offers.
Some Unexpected Foods to Freeze
Fresh corn — Or, actually, most fresh vegetables. Simply protect them from freezer burn and put them away until you need them. There is no need to toss out veggies that have gone bad as long as you are proactive and freeze them before it becomes an issue.
Bean dips — If you ever find yourself craving dip to go with your chips, but making an entire batch means throwing some out, consider freezing the leftovers as an alternative.
Eggs (without shells) — If you do not use a lot of eggs but like to keep them on hand just in case, simply crack some eggs open and freeze them.
Cooked rice and pasta — Freezing cooked rice and pasta can save you a lot of time if you use these items frequently. Cook a big batch on Sunday and then take a bag out every morning. It will be thawed by the time you are home and ready to cook.
Pasta sauces — Just like the pasta, make a big batch and freeze. You can make small servings by freezing it in ice cube trays.
